The Road to Accident-free Driving

About seven billion people in the world take to the road every day. It is our aim to make future mobility as safe as possible for all of these people. As a pioneer in matters of safety, this aim involves doing all we can to make our "Road to Accident-free Driving" a reality. Daimler engineers are invariably ahead of their time when it comes to vehicle safety development. Our primary objective is to prevent accidents from happening in the first place.

Active Brake Assist applies the brakes automatically if the system detects an imminent head-to-tail collision and the driver fails to react
Experimental Safety Vehicle (ESF) 2009
Blind Spot Assist, developed by Mercedes-Benz, uses radar technology to monitor the areas directly alongside and behind the car. It warns the driver when changing lanes would be too dangerous
Brake Assist PLUS: Close-range radar in conjunction with DISTRONIC
The development of the airbag has saved many people's lives. Mercedes-Benz has played a cutting edge role
Night View Assist PLUS with new function for highlighting pedestrians on the display

Our integral safety concept is based on real-life traffic scenarios and accidents. In our passenger cars and commercial vehicles, the individual safety components are networked with each other and work in perfect harmony.

The Road to Accident-free Driving is based on a four-pillar strategy:
  • Prevention. We believe the driver is the key factor. The driver’s job is made easier thanks to high-performance systems which make the driver aware of his driving responsibilities and heighten his senses.
  • Response. Accident prevention is our top priority. PRE-SAFE® systems detect dangerous situations at an early stage, signal them to the driver, and intervene to provide assistance in order to minimise accidents and mitigate their consequences. The car becomes part of the “thinking process”.
  • Protection. For over 50 years, innovative vehicle concepts and intelligent protection systems have been helping to mitigate the consequences of accidents for all road users.
  • Rescue. Even after an accident, safety systems still have a major part to play. Here the focus lies on enabling fast rescue and reducing secondary accidents.
