The new generation R 300 L - Simply stunning
The latest generation of R 300 L features a new, self-assured appearance. The overall impression is determined by an integrity of design that encapsulates the unique personality of this highly versatile vehicle. The focus of the designers was the completely revised front section which, by emphasising the width and making use of a horizontally structured bonnet, affords the entire vehicle a look which is as harmonious as it is powerfully dynamic. As well as the bonnet, the vehicle's wings, radiator grille and surround, headlamps and bumpers with chrome underguard have all been completely redesigned. A chrome insert with integrated LED daytime driving lights in conjunction with bi-xenon headlamps is available to enhance the look of the R-Class even further.
The side view features coupé-like lines - a pleasant contrast to conventional MPVs - and is characterised by the modified exterior mirror housings and the wheel design. The design idiom of the front is continued consistently through to the rear section which, with its new bumper covering, modified tail lamps and integrated tailpipe trim, has also been given an accentuated wide look.
The design highlights of the 3.5-litre V6 include a completely new air intake and exhaust system in conjunction with a variable resonance intake manifold and optimised inflow and outflow. Result: with the same displacement, the output compared with the previous 200 kW (272 hp) model is increased by 12.5 percent to 225 kW (306 hp), while maximum torque has increased by 5.7 percent to 370 Newton metres (predecessor: 350 Nm) and now is available over a broad engine speed range from 3500 to 5250 rpm.
In parallel with this substantial increase in power, Mercedes engineers have achieved an even more impressive reduction in fuel consumption. The predecessor's NEDC consumption was already good at 10.0 litres of premium petrol per 100 kilometres, but has now been cut by almost a quarter. The new V6 petrol engine in the S 350 L BlueEFFICIENCY is content with 7.6 litres per 100 kilometres. That adds up to savings of 2.4 litres or 24 percent, and makes the S 350 L BlueEFFICIENCY the most economical petrol model in the luxury class. CO2 emissions have also fallen by 23.5 percent to 179 grams per kilometre (long wheelbase). The S 350 L BlueEFFICIENCY combines excellent consumption figures with dynamic performance, accelerating from standstill to 100 km/h in 6.9 seconds. Top speed is 250 km/h (electronically limited).
Despite a considerable increase in power of 35 kW (47 hp), Mercedes developers have been able to reduce the combined fuel consumption of the S 500 L BlueEFFICIENCY significantly. At 9.3 litres of premium petrol per 100 kilometres, this is 16 percent (long wheelbase) below the figure for the preceding model. An outstanding figure in the luxury class, this corresponds to CO2 emissions of 219 grams per kilometre. The excellent efficiency goes hand in hand with superior performance: the S 500 L BlueEFFICIENCY sprints from zero to 100 km/h in impressive 5.0 seconds. Top speed is 250 km/h (electronically limited). The increase in output and torque despite the reduced displacement is mainly due to the use of two turbochargers – one for each bank of cylinders. These force the intake air into the eight combustion chambers at a pressure of up to 0.9. The turbochargers are configured to provide a high torque at low engine speeds, and an outstanding 600 newton metres are already available between 1600 and 4750 rpm.
As a new feature the Night View Assist Plus available on S 350 L and S 500 L BlueEFFICIENCY with infrared camera is now equipped with a special pedestrian detection function: as soon as the system detects pedestrians on the road ahead, they are highlighted on the display to make them more readily noticeable.

This seven-speed transmission now has new bearings and couplings, operates with different oil pressures and uses a low-friction oil. These measures reduce friction and churning losses, thereby improving efficiency. The new torque converter with slip-reduced lockup clutch likewise improves efficiency and aids fuel economy. In addition, standstill decoupling lowers fuel consumption. This technical feature reduces transmission input torque in "D" when the car is at rest, for example at traffic lights. This lowers the stress on the engine, making for lower fuel consumption, better vehicle acoustics and smoother idling. The slip-controlled clutch is engaged as soon as the driver releases the operating brake, ensuring no delay when the vehicle moves off.
The Dynamic Handling Package also includes a three-spoke steering wheel with shift paddles on the steering wheel. The steering-wheel shift paddles allow drivers to change gear manually without taking their hands off the steering wheel. It also allows sporty and fast motor-racing-style gear changes as well as a sporty flair as the paddles can be clearly seen by the driver.
Topping the performance is its exquisite interior and exterior. Both driver and front passenger are being hugged snugly by the front sports seats when the car is negotiating through tight bends. AMG Sports Package coupled with Dynamic Handling Package: comfort and sportiness and styling all in one
Mercedes-Benz has developed a Dynamic Handling Package which offers drivers a choice of two shift programs – Sport and Comfort. Within these two suspension modes, the shock absorbers are subject to variable electronic control.
A total of seven sensors monitor the current driving situation and relay their information to an electronic control unit, which then calculates the optimum shock absorber characteristic. Depending on the current road or operating conditions, the system adjusts the damping forces for each individual wheel – variably, for even more ride comfort and individuality. When driving normally on poor road surfaces, a soft damper setting can be selected to maximise occupant comfort while maintaining excellent handling stability and safety. If the driver decides that more brisk progress is called for however, the shock absorber settings can be manually adapted to meet the wish for more dynamic performance.
The driver is able to predetermine the basic vehicle set-up by pressing either the Comfort or Sport button on the dashboard. In Sport mode, the hydraulic forces of the shock absorbers are increased to achieve yet greater handling stability at high speeds and reduce the inherent under steer at speeds up to 120 km/h, for example. Unique combination of driver assistance systems
A combination of ultra-modern assistance and protection systems turns the S Class into an "intelligent" partner that can see, feel, respond reflexively and act independently to prevent accidents or mitigate their effects. For the first time Mercedes-Benz also uses cameras in these systems - these are able to look well ahead, monitor the car's surroundings and interpret critical situations. One example is the Adaptive Highbeam Assist.
